Ability to balance attention to detail with meeting deadlines

Ability to communicate and defend rationale behind design decisions

Nice to have:

Experience or interest working in an agile environment

Programming experience or strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript

An understanding of data visualisation methods and principles

Big Fish Design Ltd.: Frontend web developer

(Chelsea, London)
Big Fish Design are looking for a talented, middleweight frontend developer to join our established and tight-knit digital team.

We’re looking for a solid, middleweight frontend developer with hopefully a few years of HTML and CSS under their belt. While a lot of what we do is developing websites — getting visually stunning, engaging content seen by millions of people — we also do a lot of more complex and interesting projects, including things like developing large-scale HTML5 games for our clients.

While we don’t go along with the idea that someone’s worth is dictated by their years of experience, this isn’t really a junior position; we’re looking for someone with solid, proven skills.

Things that are going to be pretty essential:

A solid background in HTML and CSS

An up-to-date knowledge of modern techniques — that is, treating concepts like progressive enhancement and responsiveness as more than buzzwords

At least a passing knowledge of jQuery — enough to do DOM manipulation, animation, etc.

A head for mobile web development

Things that would be really handy:

A more serious knowledge of JavaScript — consuming APIs, familiarity with libraries other than just jQuery, experience writing your own jQuery plugins, etc.

Knowledge of WordPress theming — nothing particularly complex

Experience with Git — it’s easy to learn, so no worries if you’ve not used it, but being able to hit the ground running is always a bonus

Experience with SCSS + Compass — again, straightforward to learn, but experience is a bonus

A good eye for design and a passion for the visual — we're definitely a design-led agency, so if that appeals to you then you're likely to flourish

Things that would make us jump for joy on encountering you:

A solid history of participating in interesting open source projects — e.g. on GitHub

We’re a multidisciplinary design agency who work with some great clients — people like Yeo Valley, Dorset Cereals, Tyrrells crisps, and Gü puds. We work across branding, packaging and digital to create for our clients beautiful things of almost every kind.

Our office is based in Chelsea, and we have some great views from the office east down the Thames towards central London. Our digital team is nine strong, and we currently have three frontend developers. We’re strong believers in a flat hierarchy, though, and think that people work best when they’re given autonomy — so there’ll be no pointy-haired pencil-pushing here.

Tech-wise, we’re an all-Mac shop; developers get a shiny new 27” iMac to do their development on, and we use Git for version control. Feel free to use whatever development environment suits, but our developers tend to use SublimeText or TextMate.

Some of our work

We've worked on a fair few sites over the years; here are some examples:

https://www.yeovalley.co.uk/
